Jueves Santo 2011

Guatemala is a very religious country and like every year we have Holy Week (Semana Santa or Semana Mayor). People around here enjoy doing sawdust carpets in vivid colors. Another tradition is to load wooden platforms and carry them using shifts a few blocks in the streets.

All people (local or tourists) are invited to join and help in the making of the carpets in the streets. You have to be very carefull and for many people this is a one time life experience.

Here is a pic so you can imagine how crowdy it is in these days in Antigua Guatemala streets with a lot of security for foreigners.
This guy climbed up to have a better visual of the festivities (processions)

Women also carry a wood plaftorm (procession). In Christianity this is a religious way to reenact the Passion of Christ in a ceremonial manner.

How do you live Holy Week or Easter in your area?

We have nothing that festive or colorful here.
