50mm

New member in my lens arsenal: The Canon EF 50mm f1/8 lens.

Recently I have been looking and searching in websites about the most popular lenses for photography enthusiasts and I found this particular lense was highly rated, mostly because for its price (US$100) but I got in not only for that but because you can get a wider lens aperture (the 1/8 f number) meaning you can take better pictures with low light.

Canon XS (1000D) body with 50mm lens attached.

My camera had the default 18-55mm lens and with this new lens I can practice to take other kind of pictures. Manual and review sites states that this lens is most used particularly for face photography but is also good for everyday photo. Its very light and easy to carry.

Super extra crispy and sharp photos. I really like how easy is to get a blurry background when taking photos with this lens (technically speaking this effect is known as Depth of Field - DOF)

I also shoot my dis-organized bookshelf while I was testing the lens. Canon XS, 50mm, f2.8, ISO 80

My two lenses for photo shooting: 18-55mm (standard kit lens included with camera) and 50mm lens.

The 50mm 1.8 II is definitely worth it considering the quality vs price tag. Sure its cheap price shows in the build which is mostly plastic but to be able to get a decent prime for that price is unbeatable.

I've been eying the 50mm 1.4 after seeing the results fellow amateur photographers realize with their primes.

Then again, I've been thinking of upgrading to a 7D.

Nice purchase =)
F/1.8 is sure great to make some great bokeh (blurry effect), and quite a luminous aperture.
Even though it is a fixed focal, 50mm is indeed good for everyday pics.
I have a 20mm and 100mm fixed lens, and always have to come near or stand back from my subject ^^;;;

a 50mm is always a great add to you camera. like noted by lu-k, the bokeh is great for the out of focus stuff in the background.

Since I do nature photography, I have a 80-300mm lense. I use my 18-55mm for the figures

@Smithy: Thanks. I saw your comment on twitter. Im happy for the moment with the lens. ^^

@lu-k: Im starting to see that exactly. I was taking photos to some girls and since the lens is fixed I had to come near to them. ;)

@bluedrakon: Have you considered a macro lens for figures?
